Robberies around Clapham High Street rose from 96 to 135 in the first eight months of 2026. Lambeth now runs weekend patrols to 2.30am and held a knife amnesty.

Robberies around Clapham High Street rose by 41% in the first eight months of this year. Police recorded 135 between January and August 2026, against 96 in the same months of 2025. Thefts from the person, such as phone snatches and pickpocketing, rose from 342 to 434.

The figures are our own count from police.uk street-level data, for the stretch between Clapham Common and Clapham North stations.

Lambeth Council has now set out what it is doing about it. Most of the detail is in written answers to councillors, published for the full Council meeting on 14 October (Lambeth Council Questions).

Night patrols until 2.30am

Council enforcement officers have been patrolling Brixton and Clapham at weekends until 2.30am, the council said on 16 October (Lambeth Council). They are targeting unlicensed food stalls and other illegal traders.

The council’s case is that these stalls draw crowds of people leaving pubs and clubs. Those crowds, it says, give thieves and robbers a chance to target people “who may be distracted or vulnerable after a night out”. It adds that the food has not been checked for hygiene, and that some illegal trading is linked to organised crime.

Councillor Jonathan Bartley, the Cabinet Member for Safer, Thriving Neighbourhoods, said: “While the police lead on tackling crime, the council has an important role to play in preventing situations that put people at risk.”

In his written answer to the council, he said he asked officers to run night operations in Clapham “over successive weekends in September”. He said police supported them with extra officers and “equipment was seized”. The answer does not say how much, or how many traders were stopped.

A knife amnesty on the High Street

In August a weapon surrender scheme ran on Clapham High Street. It was funded by the Home Office and run with the Metropolitan Police and FazAmnesty.

The council says the location was picked because analysis of local intelligence and crime patterns showed “elevated levels of knife-enabled robbery and violence-related offending” there.

The answer was to Councillor Erica Abu. She asked what the council had done in Clapham East after the fatal stabbing on Tremadoc Road this summer.

What else the council lists

The written answers also say:

  • Lambeth has won £142,857 from the Mayor’s Violence Reduction Unit for youth outreach and robbery prevention work.
  • That work aims to reach about 4,000 children and young people over two years, with more intensive support for 50 judged at higher risk.
  • In April to June, community patrols and amnesties across the borough took 16 weapons out of circulation.
  • Officers have been asked to talk to bike hire operators about the speed of bikes crossing Clapham Common, after concerns from the Common’s management advisory committee.

The council says it does not routinely count how many young people its services support in each ward, so it could not give a figure for Clapham East.

How we counted

The police.uk figures cover a rectangle from Clapham Common station to Clapham North station, taking in Clapham High Street and the streets either side. Police.uk places each crime at the nearest of a set of anonymous map points, so the totals are approximate at street level.

Within that area, the map points with the most robberies and thefts from the person in 2026 were those labelled “Nightclub”, “Supermarket” and Edgeley Lane, all at the Clapham Common end of the High Street. August had the fewest robberies of any month this year, 11, but one month is too short to call a trend.

What it means for you

If you are out late on Clapham High Street, keep your phone out of sight around the late-night food stalls, where the council says crowds gather after the pubs and clubs close. Report a theft or robbery to the Metropolitan Police online, or call 999 if it is happening now.

Our Clapham things to do page lists what is on in the area, and travel home late is on our Clapham tube and train times page.
