The Black Culture Market is free at Lambeth Town Hall on 10 and 11 October. Plus a £20 archives talk, two tours from Windrush Square and Southbank dates.
The Black Culture Market returns to Lambeth Town Hall for Black History Month on Saturday 10 and Sunday 11 October, and it is free. More than 40 Black-owned businesses are expected, from noon to 5pm on both days. You need to register for a free ticket first.
It heads a short list of October dates in Brixton and across Lambeth that we have checked against each organiser’s own booking page. Two are already down to their last tickets, so book early if you want a seat.

Black Culture Market, 10 and 11 October
The market is in the Assembly Hall at Lambeth Town Hall, 1 Brixton Hill, SW2 1RW. It runs from 12pm to 5pm on Saturday and Sunday. Entry is free, but the organiser asks everyone to register on Eventbrite.
This edition’s theme is “Honouring Our Communities”. The organiser describes itself as connecting communities with Black entrepreneurs through events that celebrate Black culture, creativity, food and music. The Black History Month listing for the market says there will be over 40 Black-owned businesses, including:
- fashion designers and jewellery makers
- artists and authors
- skincare brands
- food producers
One date to watch. That national listing gives the market as 3 and 4 October. The organiser’s own site and its Eventbrite booking page both say 10 and 11 October, so go by those.
Radical Justice at Black Cultural Archives, 7 October
Human rights lawyer Nani Jansen Reventlow will discuss her book Radical Justice: Building the World We Need. She will be in conversation with Dr Wanda Wyporska, chief executive of Black Cultural Archives.
The event is on Wednesday 7 October from 6.30pm to 8.30pm at 1 Windrush Square, SW2 1EF. Tickets are £20 and it is for ages 16 and over. The organiser says there are no refunds. Signed copies of the book will be on sale afterwards.
Two tours from Windrush Square
The Black History Culture Tour Bus, Saturday 17 October. The bus leaves from the African and Caribbean War Memorial on Windrush Square. The organiser, RepYourFlags, says doors open at 11.30am and it departs at noon. The route runs through Stockwell and Vauxhall, then on to Buckingham Palace and Hyde Park, before returning to Brixton at about 2.30pm, traffic allowing. A live host tells the stories at each stop. Canapés and a route map are included. Alcohol is served on board, so it is 18 and over. Eventbrite lists tickets at £38.62 to £65.71.
NLA walking tour: Brixton Black History, Saturday 24 October. This two-hour walk with Blue Badge Guide Angela Morgan starts at 2pm. New London Architecture’s booking page says it meets on Windrush Square near the Ritzy. It passes Southwyck House, known as the Barrier Block, and Lambeth Town Hall, then finishes at Brixton Village. Tickets are from £16.80 including VAT. NLA describes the route as mostly step-free, with some narrow and uneven pavements. Wheelchair users are asked to confirm dimensions first by emailing events@nla.london.
On the South Bank, about three miles north
The borough’s biggest names this October are on the river at Waterloo. That is about three miles north of Brixton and Clapham, in the north of Lambeth. Both Southbank Centre events below showed “last few tickets” on 11 September.
- Dua Lipa and Zadie Smith: White Teeth. Saturday 24 October at 3pm, Royal Festival Hall. Smith discusses her 2000 debut novel with Dua Lipa. It is part of the London Literature Festival and runs about 1 hour 15 minutes. Tickets are £29 to £91.
- Lemn Sissay: Let the Light Pour In, Live. Thursday 29 October at 7.30pm, Queen Elizabeth Hall. The poet reads from the book and tells the stories behind the poems. It runs about 1 hour 20 minutes. Tickets are £32 to £41.
- The Story. Tracey Scott Wilson’s newsroom drama is at the National Theatre’s Olivier until 24 October. Clint Dyer directs and Letitia Wright stars. Monday to Saturday seats are £30, £42, £65, £85 and £110, plus a £4 fee per online or phone order. It runs about 2 hours 30 minutes, including the interval.
What it means for you
- For a free day out, the market is the one. Register on Eventbrite, then turn up at Lambeth Town Hall any time between noon and 5pm on 10 or 11 October.
- Book the paid events now. The Southbank shows were down to their last tickets a month out. The archives talk is non-refundable, so be sure of the date.
