A 92-year-old man died after being hit by a van on Curnick's Lane, West Norwood, on Thursday. The driver, 72, was arrested. Police want dashcam and doorbell footage.
A 92-year-old man has died after he was hit by a van on Curnick’s Lane in West Norwood. It happened at about 2.55pm on Thursday 24 September.
The Metropolitan Police published an appeal for witnesses on Friday afternoon (Met). Officers went to the scene with the London Ambulance Service. The force said that, despite the efforts of the emergency services, the man was pronounced dead at the scene. His next of kin have been told and are being supported by specialist officers.
The man has not been named.
The arrest
The van driver, a 72-year-old man, was arrested at the scene. The Met said he was held on suspicion of:
- causing death by dangerous driving
- causing death whilst driving without insurance
He remained in custody when the force published its appeal. An arrest is not a charge, and he has not been named. We will report any charging decision the Met announces.
Detective Sergeant Kirsty Troy is leading the investigation. She said: “This is a devastating incident in which a man has sadly lost his life. Our thoughts are with the man’s family and loved ones as they come to terms with this tragic loss.”
She added that officers are “working hard to establish the circumstances surrounding the collision”.
What the police are asking for
The Met wants to hear from anyone who saw the collision or was nearby at the time. It is asking in particular for:
- dashcam footage
- CCTV
- doorbell camera footage

Where it happened
Curnick’s Lane is a short residential lane off Chapel Road in SE27, according to OpenStreetMap. It is about 450 metres south of West Norwood station, and about three miles south-east of Clapham Common. The police statement does not say exactly where on the lane the collision happened.
What the collision record shows
We checked the Department for Transport’s road casualty statistics for Lambeth. They count collisions reported to police in which someone was hurt.
From 2021 to 2025, Lambeth recorded:
- 939 pedestrian casualties
- 244 pedestrians seriously injured
- 15 pedestrians killed
Six of those 15 pedestrians were aged 70 or over. They were aged 71, 80, 82, 84, 86 and 87.
Closer to Curnick’s Lane, the same figures record 12 injury collisions within 200 metres of it over those five years. None was fatal and two were serious. Three pedestrians were hurt in them, all slightly.
These figures only go up to the end of 2025, so Thursday’s collision is not in them.
